I primarily make representational narrative Art using a variety of mediums. I have a strong interest in using imagery and themes that combine the attributes of attraction and repulsion, a kind of fixation on the beautiful grotesque. I choose to depict this contradictory duality using my personal brand of humor, imagery from fantasy, mythology, and horror genres, partnered with Trompe-l'œil and photorealism techniques in order to achieve images that intellectually one knows do not exist in reality, but are rendered and detailed in such a way that it seems perhaps could exist. I use these images as a form of storytelling, usually stories that I write myself that are based on, or inspired by past and contemporary mythologies. I create and design characters that coexist in a shared fictive universe; they appear in and interact with each other across multiple pieces. I choose to create narrative art not only as a way of getting these stories out of my own mind and into a more concrete format, but because I am interested in in why we as people crave phantasmagoric stories to begin with. The archetypical characters that exist in mythology and history throughout many cultures, why we have them, and how we recycle them, fascinate me. I am interested in why particular attributes and traits are given to certain types of character types and not others, and exploring the possibility of changing those established characteristics, questioning the cliché, (e.g. my Buddy Death paintings), where I depict the Grim Reaper participating in very benign activities as opposed to the typical illustration of that character taking the souls of the dead.
